ORLANDO, Fla. — Newly elected Orlando City Commissioner Shan Rose says she’s already hitting the ground running on leading the district.

Rose won a runoff election on Tuesday night, defeating Travaris McCurdy, to fill a spot left open earlier this year by suspended commissioner Regina Hill.

“I told everyone on day one we’d be working, and that’s what we’re doing,” said Rose.

Rose was out and about at an event at the Orange County Supervisor of Elections Office Wednesday, and then at a gathering for a nonprofit she works with.

Rose is slated to be sworn in as District 5 Commissioner at the June 24 Orlando City Council meeting. She said she’s ready to work with Orlando city leaders, including those who didn’t endorse her during her campaign.

“District 5 is the epicenter of development and it’s the heart of this city, so I’m just looking forward to serve, whether it’s until the next election or when the commissioner gets her seat back,” said Rose.

Despite not getting the endorsements of Mayor Buddy Dyer and some other city leaders, Rose said she’s been in touch with the mayor since her win, and she’s ready to work with other city leaders to tackle challenges in the district.

“I look forward to working with my colleagues — we have a lot of work to make sure economics thrive here,” said Rose. “We have a lot to make sure we address the housing, the safety, the homelessness, and we’re going to work together to make sure this is the best District 5 as possible, and I look forward to it.”

Rose did get the endorsement of Orlando builders and Realtors, and said she’ll be sitting down with them to address the affordable housing issue. She said she’s already focused on making sure people in District 5 can find good jobs.

“I was actually talking with someone this morning,” Rose said. “How do we get your youth more jobs? How do we get seniors more programming and more activities? So I will continue the work I’ve been doing in District 5, but now I will be able to take a leadership role in it.”

And in an attempt to unify leaders and constituents in the district, Rose said she’s planning a prayer breakfast. She said she’s also planning town halls so she can meet with people throughout the district to come up with an agenda on what issues to prioritize.
