EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — David Lynch, the artistic filmmaker who helmed visionary works including "Blue Velvet" and "Mulholland Drive," has died, according to his family. He was 78.

Lynch announced in 2024 that he had been diagnosed with emphysema after a lifetime of smoking.

"It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch," his family's post on Facebook read. "We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us."

Lynch also co-created "Twin Peaks," which was revived for a third season in 2017.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
