Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher doesn’t put an age limit on leadership.

It’s a trait typically exhibited by juniors and seniors, but Seminoles safety Derwin James is breaking the mold.

James, a rising sophomore and graduate of Haines City High, is revered by teammates and respected by coaches, who expect him to be one of the nation’s top safeties 2016.

“The physical skills are crazy, he’s unbelievably instinctive but he’s an intelligent guy. He’s a very intelligent person, not just a football player,” Fisher said following Saturday’s spring game in Orlando.

“Derwin is a fun guy to be around, guys just flock to him. He has that charisma about him and guys just get it.”

James was second on the team with 91 tackles last season and he recorded nine in Saturday’s scrimmage. His performance throughout spring practice earned him co-defensive MVP honors and he was presented a plaque at halftime of the game.

James flashed a brief smile and was even-keeled when asked about Fisher lauding his leadership abilities.

“That means a lot,” James said.  “It means that I’m not just worried about myself, I’m getting my teammates better at the same time getting myself better and I feel like that’s good praise from the head man.”
