UCF men’s basketball standout Adonys Henriquez is set to compete on the international stage this summer. The Orlando native will head to the Pan American Games with the Dominican Republic National Team later this month.

Henriquez, who left for the Dominican Republic last week to begin training, is currently a member of the nation’s Under-25 team. The United States, Brazil and Argentina are among the other nations in the eight-team field at the Pan Am Games.

The tournament is scheduled for July 21-25 in Toronto with the Dominican Republic getting started at 6 p.m. on July 21 against Canada. All games will be played at the Ryerson Athletic Centre.

“It’s always a great honor for a young man to play for his country,” UCF head coach Donnie Jones said. “We are very proud and excited for Adonys to have this opportunity to compete at the Pan American Games.”

Henriquez was the Knights’ second leading scorer with 10.8 points per game as a freshman landing him on the American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team. His 65 three-pointers made were the second most ever by a UCF freshman and his .394 three-point shooting percentage ranked fourth in the conference.

Henriquez, who grew up in Orlando and went to high school at nearby Orlando Christian Prep, was born in New York City. However, both of his parents are originally from the Dominican Republic, which allows him to play for the country’s national team.

“I’m really excited to have this opportunity,” Henriquez said. “I can’t wait to play with the other guys on the Dominican team and head to Toronto to take on the other countries at the Pan Am Games.”
