During the summer months, BHSN will be revisiting some of our best Athletes of the Week from the 2014-2015 school season to catch up on what’s new.

Back in October 2014, we introduced you to Denzel Houston, a sophomore quarterback for Mainland, who just led the Bucs to a program defining 42-30 victory over the reigning and now 2-time 5A state champion Plantation American Heritage. But when playoff time arrived Mainland found themselves on the losing end of the state semifinals game to Miami Central for the second straight year.

"We were supposed to win the game, we just made a couple mistakes," Denzel said. "And in a game like that the team with the most mistakes will lose the game and the team with the least mistakes will win it. It’s very tough, they’re a very good team, and we’re a good team too. But this year, yeah!"

There’s good reason for that smile of his, MaxPreps lists Mainland as the 19th best team in the country in their preseason rankings. This off-season it’s been bulking season for Denzel.

"This summer I’ve been eatin’, getting my weight up, trying to get my weight up. So I can get bigger quicker faster."
