There is no language barrier when it comes to playing sports--that’s what Satellite High School’s Eddie Brace learned last summer when he traveled to Haiti for his Eagle Leadership project--a trip that would change his life.

“He had learned about the education mission and wanted to help out he knew they went there in the summer and so he took his talents in sports and organized the whole thing,” Veronica Brace, Eddie’s mother explained.

“Really the hardest part was the language barrier,” Eddie said of his travels.

“We didn’t speak the same language obviously so I really couldn’t communicate but I led the sports activities through the vacation bible school, you don’t need to speak the same language to really communicate with someone through sports because everybody knows how to play soccer, basketball so we really communicated through athletics and I made some really good friendships down there with the Haitian children.”

Eddie implemented a summer athletic program for children in four different remote mountain villages and garnered about 600 participants—many of which he built special bonds with.
