With 11 seconds left it was LaDerien Griffin’s pulverizing dunk that sent Providence fans into a frenzy and ended what would have been a school record season for The First Academy Royals.

In a close 3A semifinal contest it was the Stallions who had the edge over the Royals Tuesday night, 60-52.

TFA(26-5) held a nine-point advantage at the 3:41 mark in the second quarter before Providence(30-1) went on a 6-0 run to close out the half and tighten the gap to three, 27-24.

In the third quarter the Stallions extended their run to 19-4 and held Royal’s leading scorer Fletcher McGee to just three points the rest of the way.

“Our defense was a little better in the second half [Ben] Bobbit did a great job on Fletcher [McGee],” said coach Tim Martin. “It wasn’t pretty but it was enough to get the victory.”

McGee ended his high school career with 13 points, two shy of breaking the school’s all-time scoring record.

Important free throws went down for the Stallions who down the stretch shot 79 percent from the line to run away with the game.

Princeton commit forward Wyatt Walker put up a team high 18 points and 12 boards as Jason Burnell also netted a double-double with 16points and 12 rebounds.

Providence will now advance onto the 3A Championship game Thursday morning at 9:35am vs. either Cardinal Mooney or Sagemont.

The game will be televised live on Bright House Sports Network CH47/HD1147 and on BHSNLive.com.
