Payton Caffrey has worn a permanent smile since Winter Springs won the school’s first volleyball state championship, defeating Jupiter for the Class 8A title.

“I’m still speechless about it. I haven’t stopped smiling since we won. It was a really important game, something that personally I have been looking forward to since I got here my freshman year,” said Caffrey.

After four years on varsity, Payton’s stats are staggering. The senior is the all-time Central Florida kills leader, coming in with 1,951. Second on the list? 365 kills back.

”I think Payton blew it out of the water this year. She crushed the record and she has set a new record and it is going to be a tough one to beat for anybody.,” said Winter Springs Volleyball Coach Kim Vach.

It’s quite a legacy for the outside hitter who’ll play next year at West Virginia.

“I know there are going to be bigger blockers, there are going to be better defenses and smarter players. So I know that winning this is going to show that alright this is just one level and you are about to step up to the next one.”

Payton is ready for the challenge and looking forward to the future. But just because she is on to bigger and better next year, doesn’t mean she is going to forget this moment.

It’d be hard to with the gold medal going with her.

“I’m taking it with me,” Payton said as she laughed. “I am going to hang it on my wall so I know that I can bring Florida with me because I know that I’ll miss it and all the girls, and I’ll miss my family and the coaches. So I know that once I hang that on my dorm wall, it’ll be like alright there is my Florida.”

A perfect souvenir after four years of hard work.
