The Viera Hawks football program put every team in Brevard County on notice.

The Hawks, 14-3, home win over a tradition rich Merritt Island in Friday night's Kickoff Classic made a huge statement.

Viera's gritty defense caused four turnovers and four sacks to secure the team's first win over the Mustangs.  That unit limited the 5A power to a field goal on 11 total possessions.

Fourth-year head coach Kevin Mays rode the legs of RB Zach Blanch.  The junior gained 69 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.

QB Hayden Kingston connected with the standout receiver Tre Nixon in the second quarter for the first score of the game.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs offense looked stagnant for most of the night.  With the starting quarterback job still up for grabs, each of Merritt Island's signal caller played to their strength.  Kyle Coleman, who returned from last year's squad, was more effective in the air completing 9 of 15 passes for 70 yards and gained 20 yards on the ground.  Conversely, Fleming Island transfer Keegan Henderson rushed for 56 yards and threw for another 51.

Merritt Island will open the season next Friday on the road at New Smyrna Beach.  Viera also will open on the road at Rockledge.
