Lake Howell moved quickly to get a new football coach, hiring Dave Wensyel for the position Thursday afternoon.

Wensyel replaces Tom Oliver, who resigned last week to accept an administrative role at the school.

"Dave is the perfect fit for our type of student athlete," Lake Howell athletic director Danya Harris said. "It's a relief to have him hired but now the work begins to put everything together for the season."

Wensyel was an assistant at East River last season and served as the head coach at Edgewater for the 2012 season.

"We like that he's been a head coach. He has a sense of how things run and that will help in the transition." Harris said. "He will bring a great family atmosphere and that's what we need at Lake Howell. He has the skills to take our program to the next level."

Lake Howell went 5-5 last season and hasn't finished above .500 since 1996. The Silver Hawks last made the playoffs in 2007.

Wensyel has also worked as an assistant at DeLand and East Ridge, where he spent six seasons under coach Bud O'Hara.

"He wants to be a part of a community and build relationships starting at the youth level, build a program as a whole," Harris said. "I think he's a person that can bring that to our community."

Harris said that Wensyel plans to meet with the staff on Friday and be introduced to the players on Monday. With fall practice set to begin on Aug. 4, many of the assistant coaches are expected to remain in place.

"He's familiar with some of our coaches and some of our kids and that was important," Harris said. - "He wants to work with our current staff and make the necessary adjustments."
