After scoring a run in the first inning of a Feb. 25 game against Orange City University, it took Lake Brantley 49 days and 16 innings to plate another.

But that second run was enough to give the Patriots an important 2-1 victory in 17 innings against the Titans on Monday afternoon.

The teams continued Monday because their initial meeting was stopped after nine innings because University's field doesn't have lights.

Patriots junior Trent Blum isn't the most heralded player on Lake Brantley's roster, but he proved to be the most important in Monday's result.

With runners on first and second in the top of the 17th, Blum came through with a sacrifice bunt in his first at-bat of the season. Miami signee Carl Chester followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Chase Haecker from third for the only run of the game.

University threatened in the bottom of the 17th, loading the bases with one out, but Blum came in from right field and recorded the final two outs to end the game.

The victory means defending state champion Lake Brantley will open the district tournament as the No. 4 seed and face Lake Mary in the quarterfinals. University, which would have been the No. 2 seed with a win, dropped to No. 6 and will take on 2012 state champ Spruce Creek in the first round.
