When Katelyn Jones hits the lanes she’s looking for one thing – pin action. The Oviedo sophomore is coming off a great week where she bowled a total of 903 over four games including a high of 246.

“It was just a matter of relaxing because I knew I had it under control, under lock,” Jones said. “I could have just told myself I need a strike now and I was able to. When it’s fun, you always do better.”

She admits she hit a midseason lull after getting off to a hot start. So she put in the extra time with Coach Pat Costello to tweak a few areas in her game. Since then, the 10th grader has gotten back to her old form.

“We’re learning about bowling and how to make it move and adjustments, her ball speed, lots of things. She’s getting it.

“I know some people don’t believe bowlers are athletes but bowlers are athletes and she’s an athlete. She has the mental game of an athlete. She says coach give me the ball, I want the ball. That means I wanna give her the ball, got it. Go get that double in the 10th frame,” Costello added.

“I shut everything out. I get up there and I just throw the best ball I can and she has to match up to me and me not match up to her,” Jones said.

The sophomore says she thrives on the pressure. Jones was an integral part of the Lions state championship team a season ago and she’s hoping to lead her team back there again.
