Freshman year of high school Maverick Layne was discovered during a PE class at Seminole High school—after swimming two laps for the varsity coaches he was given a spot on the swim team.

Three years later the junior has swept the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races and led his 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams to top finishes at this year's Seminole Athletic Conference Championships.

Ultimately guiding the boys team to its fourth consecutive SAC title.

“It was really kinda expected, not to be cocky or anything, just based on the times,” Layne said. “I looked at the heat sheet and saw that my times we’re ahead of other swimmers in the lanes next to me but when I won it was definitely a good feeling.”

The win couldn’t have come at a better time as the team prepares now for playoffs next week.

“Our confidence is really high right now as a team especially,” Layne said. “All the guys on the team are, we’re all friends. We’re all close friends and we all like each other. So it just makes it that much better so our confidence like going into district a week from Thursday its going to be a lot of fun we’re hoping to win that too!”
