Osceola County broke ground Wednesday on a new sheriff’s training center in St. Cloud.

The building will be constructed on a 101-acre site in east Osceola County.

The new center will have classrooms, an area for driver training with a skid pad and multiple shooting ranges.

Sheriff Bob Hansell says because law enforcement has grown, there are less training areas available.

“The better trained the officer is, the better trained his is to respond to those types of calls,” said Hansell. “Or to make sure that the citizens are getting the services that they deserve. We want to be on the cutting edge of training like every other agency here and that will afford us that opportunity.”

The center will be located on Arthur J. Gallagher Boulevard.  The first phase of the project cost an estimated $13.7 million.
