A man in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed by a SUV on Thursday morning in Palm Bay, police said.

The crash happened about 7:59 a.m., Palm Bay Police said.

James William Smith, 78, was crossing from the north side of Bottlebrush Drive when an eastbound SUV struck him.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Roads in the area were closed for about three hours, but all lanes were back open just before 11 a.m.

Investigators said the crash was caused by the pedestrian crossing mid-block and outside of a crosswalk. Investigators said Smith failed to yield to the vehicle's right-of-way.
