Volusia County may be closer to working out a deal with its teachers regarding salaries after months of conflict. But some teachers are not happy about it.

  • Volusia County school district approved 2 teacher pay proposals Wednesday
  • The proposals are not what teachers asked for
  • The school district insists it does not have the money, which the teachers union says is not true

On Wednesday, the school board approved two proposals.

One is a four percent pay raise that would last for two years and be effective immediately. It would come with a $500 cap on insurance subsidies.

The other proposal is a two percent raise and $500 cap. It would be effective on June 30 and only last for one year.

Teachers were upset they may have to pay more for insurance in order to receive a pay increase.

The teachers had wanted a two percent raise that was retroactive for the last half of the 2015-2016 school year, with another 2 percent rasie for next year.

The school district insists it does not have the money to pay for the teacher raises. The teachers union, however, says its own figures show the district has the money available.

A ratification committee must now decide on the proposals, and now timeline is in place yet for that meeting.
