Plans for Floatopia, a huge inflatable raft party in Cocoa Beach, are no more.

Part of the reason officials nixed the idea, according to the city, was over worries that the beach would be trashed, as had happened other places where the event took place.

"That's where I first read about it, on Facebook," says Shawn Bowman, who rents beach chairs at the end of the Minutemen Causeway, one of the prime spots of Cocoa Beach.

That location, next to Coconuts Restaurant, is where Floatopia was supposed to happen May 15.

Rumors about Floatopia circulated through social media, beckoning people to come float on rafts and party in the water.

Some said the event would have done more harm than good, "especially with the effects of the places they've already targeted," Bowman said. "If it's going to trash the beach, we don't want them around."

"It would be truthful to say he wasn't a happy camper about that," interim Cocoa Beach City Manager Charles Holland said.

Holland said he was contacted by a Miami city councilman who shared video of the trash left behind by the thousands of people at the Floatopia taking place there April 16.

Cocoa Beach quickly took steps to contact Floatopia's organizer with a certified letter, and because a special permit was never applied for, shut it down.

The city is already hosting the Thunder on the Beach speedboat races that weekend and won't allow two large events at the same time.

"You have this event that shows up out of nowhere, without following the procedure. We just can't do it," Holland said.

For Bowman said he wants visitors and the money they bring, but not this way.

"Contribute to our town, but don't trash it," Bowman said.
