The University of Central Florida Police Department continues to reiterate that safety is the top priority one day after reports of a person with a gun was inside the library.

The police department was notified around 4 p.m. of a social media post about a person with a gun inside the library. Several calls were made to police, as well.

UCF sent out emergency alert text messages and emails and also evacuated the library. Officers conducted a floor-to-floor search of the library, looking for anything matching the tips.

No gunwoman or suspicious activity was found.

The library was reopened about an hour later — just before 5 p.m.

"UCFPD will continue to investigate the claims, and those on campus can expect increased police presence over the next few days," Richard Beary, the chief of the UCF Police Department, said in a statement.

The library was packed with students studying for finals week on campus.

Beary said an officer's weapon accidentally discharged in his vehicle as he was securing it to leave the area.

"I assure you that every time our emergency response is put to the test, it becomes a learning lesson and an opportunity for improvement for UCF," Beary said. "That certainly will be the case with this incident."
