The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says a 45-foot long female right whale and her 18-foot long calf have left the Sebastian Inlet and returned to the ocean.

FWC said they swam out to sea at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after making several attempts to get out and under the bridge.

The pair were spotted Monday in the inlet, and five FWC boats were launched in the area to surround the mother whale and her calf to ensure other boaters didn't get close. It is against federal law to approach or harass a whale in the wild.

Right whales are critically endangered with fewer than 600 left in the world.

FWC said both whales appeared in good health.
