Everybody does it: making a right turn on red. But do you have to come to a complete stop before you do it?

One of our viewers, Barbara from Winter Garden, writes us this week:

"Can you get a ticket for not stopping before making a right turn at a red light?"

Stopping before the white line before you make a right turn is a good habit to get into indeed, but the language of the law may surprise you.

According to Florida Statute 316.0083, as part of the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Program:

"…a traffic citation may not be issued for failure to stop at a red light if the driver is making a right-hand turn in a careful and prudent manner at an intersection where right-hand turns are permissible."

Now although it may sound like that means you can roll through a red light, an Orange County traffic attorney tells us it only applies to tickets issued from a red-light camera, and a judge can cite that section of the law.

If an officer pulls you over for rolling though a red light and writes you a ticket, plan to pay up, as that violates state law for traffic signals.
