We’re getting a new perspective on what happened during a shootout in Sanford.

Police said Roshad Smith fired at officers on Friday night, and an officer fired back at him.

A bystander was shot in the crossfire but survived.

James Ryan sells trucks for a living at Gibson Truck World on 17-92 in Sanford. Even though he’s a Marine Corp Vet, he never expected to see what he saw on Friday night.

“You can see where one struck this nerf bar and bounced off and ricochet up under the underside of the truck," said Ryan, while pointing to the damage left behind after a police shooting in Sanford.

Smith was denied bond during a court hearing Sunday morning. He’s charged with numerous crimes, including attempted homicide.

“It was wild man. It just happened out of nowhere," Ryan said.

According to Sanford Police, they got a call saying a suspicious person was walking along 17-92 with a gun.

When they got there, an officer said Smith began shooting, so that officer shot back.

One person was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital.

“He was just a bystander," Ryan said, "the guy was walking with groceries from Walmart up the block and unfortunately he got caught in the crossfire and he was laying on the floor on the phone and he looked to be doing pretty good for somebody who was just struck by a bullet."

Ryan is glad that on a busy street, no one else was hurt. He’s also glad he was able to make it home to see his 2-year-old son.

“I might have hugged him a little tighter," Ryan said.

Police still have not said whether it was a bullet from the officer or the suspect that wounded the bystander.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
