An investigation is underway after a former Marion County Sheriff's Office corrections officer was shot and killed earlier this month while he was working on his vehicle in the driveway of his home, deputies said.

Ronnie Charles Damon, 29, was found dead around 9:49 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at his home at 301 Larch Road in Ocala. Damon was found in his driveway, and it was determined that he suffered a single gunshot wound, deputies said.

It appeared Damon was working on his vehicle at the time he was shot and killed, deputies said.

The investigation has been upgraded from a suspicious death to a homicide.

Marion County detectives said they have conducted numerous interviews with Damon's family, friends and neighbors. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement's crime laboratory is assisting with the investigation and is currently processing several pieces of evidence in the case.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered by the Marion County Sheriff's Office and $1,000 is being offered by Marion County Crime Stoppers for any information that leads to the identity and/or arrest of anyone in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Zachary Hughes at 352-369-6805 or remain anonymous and call Marion County Crime Stoppers at 352-368-STOP.
