A former college and professional football player was arrested in Sumter County for possession of drugs, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Derrick Jabar Gaffney, 35, of Jacksonville, faces multiple charges including possession of cannabis, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and felony possession of drug paraphernalia.

A trooper stopped Gaffney on Interstate 75 near mile marker 329 just before 3 p.m. on Friday. According to the release, Gaffney was stopped because the truck he was driving had illegal window tint. Gaffney also failed to stay in his lane.

The trooper noticed a strong odor coming from the vehicle and recognized it as cannabis.

Gaffney was taken to the Sumter County Jail on a $7000 bond.

He played college football at the University of Florida. Gaffney was later drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2002 NFL draft. He also played for the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins.
