The city of Palm Coast is hoping to fill open firefighter spots – an important job as they go into wildfire season.

On Wednesday, firefighters tried on their masks to make sure they fit.

Palm Coast Fire’s deputy fire chief said they always have to be ready.

"The important thing is having folks that are experienced in how to fight the fires," said Deputy Fire Chief Gerard Forte.

A full staff is how Forte said they get the job done.

"We're starting into the drier season. We'll experience more of those wildfires on a daily basis," said Forte.

Palm Coast has experienced some tragic fires in the past, including in 1985 and 1998.

Bill Butler and his family lost their home in the 1985 fire.

"It still gets to you, you know? Not something that goes away," said Butler.

"Staying vigilant and maintaining our staff is critical," said Forte.

Butler said he supports the city's new recruitment efforts and hopes firefighters take the job to keep the city safe.

"You can't say enough for what those guys do," said Butler.

A job fair will be held at Station 25 in Palm Coast on Belle Terre Parkway south of Royal Palms Parkway, Friday, Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
