The depression that formed late Sunday night has become Tropical Storm Joaquin, the tenth named storm of the season.

This storm is well offshore to the east of Central Florida and will have no direct impact on our area as it moves west-northwestward, eventually turning north.

Elsewhere, low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico is in an unfavorable atmosphere for strengthening and will only be responsible for bringing us locally heavy rain the next couple of days.

11 p.m. — Tropical Depression 11 has strengthened to Tropical Storm Joaquin, the tenth named storm of the season.

Discussion and 48-hour outlook

At 11 p.m., the center of Tropical Storm Joaquin was located near latitude 26.7 North, longitude 70.4 West.

Joaquin is moving toward the southwest near 5 mph (7 km/h).

A slow westward motion is expected during the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained have increased to near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts.

Slow strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend southeastward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches).
