The Brevard County Sheriff's Office has identified the pilot of a small plane who died after he crashed into the Indian River last month.

David Gibbs, 59, of Orlando, was killed after the small plane he was flying from Orlando Executive Airport to Titusville crashed into the Indian River as he was approaching the Space Coast Regional Airport.

The Sheriff's Office said Gibbs was an experienced pilot.

National Transportation Safety Board investigators said Gibbs tried to land once, went back up and circled around for another pass during storms and that's when the plane went down.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the NTSB and the Federal Aviation Administration.
