The Osceola County Sheriff is turning in his badge.

Sheriff Bob Hansell announced he will retire when his term is up in January 2017.

Hansell was first elected sheriff in 2005.

He's been with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office since 1976 when he started as a deputy sheriff.

Hansell has also been a SWAT team commander and a high-risk incident commander.

The sheriff's office said crime has gone down in the unincorporated areas of the county. Hansell is also credited with implementing new programs and services to encourage community involvement.

Hansell is not the only area sheriff to step down.

Seminole County Sheriff Don Eslinger said he would retire in 2017.
