Port Canaveral leaders are trying to keep up with unprecedented growth in the cruise ship industry.

Commissioners on Wednesday will consider some major improvements to their cruise terminals, worth millions of dollars.

Canaveral Port Authority commissioners will decide if they want to move forward with major upgrades to cruise terminals 5 and 10.

In addition, some renovations for Disney’s cruise terminal 8 are on the agenda.

The three projects would require $90 million in financing.

It’s a big investment, but port leaders say the return will be huge for the local tourism economy.

Both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian cruise lines are planning to base their largest ships at Port Canaveral next year.

And despite their sizes, these existing cruise terminals may not be able to handle the bigger ships.

Port leaders say bigger ships mean more passengers and that means more stops at local hotels, restaurants and attractions.
