As many of you are aware, it is the season to head back to school and that means many college students are taking out loans to pay for tuition. It’s no secret that those costs have been rising for years, but how much?

The average cost for tuition in Florida across the board, whether you went to a private or public undergraduate program, was up by about 3 percent in the 2014 to 2015 school year. So for the most part, students can expect to spend more and take on more debt for their collegiate education.

But there is some good news. There is one public college in the state of Florida that is actually lowering their tuition costs.

Daytona State College unanimously approved a 2 percent tuition decrease, making it one of the few institutions in the nation to do so in years.

“School is really expensive and, you know, I’ve been out of high school for six years,” student Olivia Loomis said. “I haven’t come back because I wasn’t able to afford it. So, I mean, it’s great to be able to come back. And lower tuition and get more students to go to college.”

This decrease in tuition won’t take effect until the spring 2016 semester. But how much will students actually save?

Daytona State College said it will result in a savings of $31 per semester for full-time students.

They said the reason they were able to pass a tuition decrease because of some better-than-expected enrollment numbers.

“Won’t have to take out as many student loans for school and have all those loans to pay back,” student Nicole McClellan said.

That makes this college one of Florida’s most affordable in terms of tuition.

But other Central Florida colleges also make that list, such as Valencia College, College of Central Florida and Lake-Sumter State College.

The average Florida in-state tuition with fees at a public four-year institution was $9,139 from 2014 to 2015.

According to the Department of Education, the average out-of-state costs for tuition and fees in Florida was $22,958.

Keep in mind, none of those figures include the added costs for room and board, which averaged around $9,800 for the last school year.
