Commuters should get ready for a major nightly traffic shift in Maitland starting Wednesday evening. The construction is a part of the I-4 Ultimate project.

The Florida Department of Transportation said three eastbound lanes of Maitland Boulevard will be shifted to the median for about three quarters of a mile. The lanes lead to I-4.

The work is planned to take place overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., so the road should be ready for morning drivers using Maitland Boulevard from the State Road 434 entrance ramp to the Keller Road intersection.

FDOT said this will allow crews to start rebuilding those existing eastbound travel lanes. The shift was supposed to happen last week, but was postponed because of rain.

“With this particular closure it’s really just a shift in the travel area," said FDOT spokesperson Dave Parks. "You’ll still have the same number of lanes, you’ll still be able to get through as you normally do. It’s just going to be in a slightly different area and we know with drivers, it’s going to take the first few days to get used to something a little different."

Additional I-4 Ultimate work in the Maitland area includes rebuilding the interchange, elevating Maitland Boulevard over surface streets and building a pedestrian bridge over I-4. The project costs $2.3 billion and is expected to be complete in about six years.
