With 34 guns stolen out of vehicles over the last 17 months, Flagler County Sheriff Jim Manfre is reminding residents to lock their vehicles.

Of the 34 firearms taken, only seven have been recovered. The value of the stolen guns is estimated to be more than $16,500.

"More guns in the hands of criminals means more innocent people may be victimized," Manfre said in a statement. "It also places our law enforcement officers at a greater risk."

Resident are reminded to take the extra time to lock their vehicles, place valuables out of sight and remove weapons when the vehicle is left unattended for an extended period of time.
