The witness reporting an ultimately fatal carjacking and crash in Volusia County Thursday told 911 the suspect appeared to be "strung out."

The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. at 1960 S. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand, which is in front of the RC Hill Mitsubishi dealership.

A good Samaritan called 911 for the frantic victim, whose PT Cruiser was just carjacked.

Caller: “She got carjacked, he stole the car and everything is in there, she said her purse, her phone, everything is in it. He’s driving down 17/92."

911: "Which way did he go?"

Caller: “North on 17/92.”

The woman, who was washing her car by hand at the self-service DeBary Car Wash on South Charles R Beall Boulevard around 11:30 a.m, tried to fight off her attacker.

Caller: “She tried to reach into the car to stop him. He kept fighting her. He peeled out of here, almost hit my car and drove off.”

In the 911 call, the carjacking suspect is described as an older man, who seemed like he had nothing to lose.

Caller: “She said he looked strung out.”

Witnesses told deputies the stolen car headed northbound on South Charles R Beall Boulevard (U.S. Highway 17/92).

The sheriff’s office said about six minutes later officers spotted the vehicle passing Saxon Boulevard and followed it as it continued north towards DeLand.

Investigators said the vehicle detoured on Kentucky Avenue and S.R. 472, then turned around and headed back to 17/92 and fled briefly northbound on 17/92 in the southbound lanes.

Somewhere along the way after the carjacking, deputies said the driver picked up a woman.

The sheriff’s office said deputies initially pursued the stolen vehicle in an effort to stop it but the decision was made to stop pursuing. Patrol units were some distance away from the vehicle when it crashed into three other cars in DeLand.

“I’m surprised they went so far after going over the spikes. That’s two red lights back. That’s a pretty good ways," said Andy Macko, who was grocery shopping nearby when the carjacking suspect sped by.

Moments later, the suspect, who was driving into oncoming traffic, caused a deadly four car pileup on 17/92 in front of the RC Hill Mitsubishi dealership, just 15 minutes after the carjacking.

“Thank goodness it wasn’t some good person, wrong place, wrong time," Macko said. "I live here off Orange Camp Road, it could be me, it could be my wife, wrong place, wrong time and that’s it."

Both the man and the woman inside the stolen car died at the scene. They have not been identified.

Two others who were in vehicles hit by that stolen car were hurt. They were were transported to Florida Hospital DeLand with possible broken bones.
