Cleanup will continue Thursday after strong storms passed through the western areas of Central Florida on Wednesday.

Residents in Tavares said it seemed like an average afternoon thunderstorm in Tavares.

"And then it started to rain and then the wind come up and it sounded just like just like a freight train," said Roger Fredette, who lives in Tavares. "I couldn't even see, I had to pull over and stop."

Moments later, a carport flew down Main Street.

"I couldn't believe it," Fredette said. "(I've never seen anything) like that in my life. I pulled up and ... half the building is gone."

The flying carport's metal frame came crashing down across from Jerry Nagel's home, but their homes weren't damaged.

"I saw debris going past," said Nagel, who lives in the Dora Canal Estates mobile home park. "We couldn't see anything else — not even a broken window."

About a half mile away on St. Clair Abrams Avenue, a sign directing motorists to Tavares City Hall was flattened by a large tree. Around the corner, another tree toppled power lines. But not a scratch on Mark Moore's historic home right across the street.

"I've got a 130-year-old house here, and the first thing I was worried about was the chimney," Moore said. "But it held up pretty good."

Tavares police said no one was injured during the severe weather.
