Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said one of his deputies was forced to shoot an woman accused of robbing a maintenance worker at gunpoint Friday morning.

Demings said Master Deputy Joe Ingerham feared for his life when he opened fire on 24-year-old Tonya Santos, shooting her at least twice. Santos was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center to be treated for her injuries, which the sheriff said were not life-threatening.

According to Demings, the robbery happened at the Chateau Orleans Apartments around 9:30 a.m.

The maintenance worker, who was not named, was opening his office at the apartment complex, when the sheriff said Santos and 26-year-old Elvin Andino approached him. Demings said Santos pulled out a gun and demanded cash.

As Santos and Andino drove away, Demings said the victim followed them to the area of Conway Road and Hoffner Avenue, where he flagged down a Belle Isle police officer who was nearby.

Ingerham also responded and, according to the sheriff, opened fire because he believed one of the suspects was pointing a gun at him.

"They were able to abandon the vehicle, and both occupants exited the vehicle and fled," Demings said. "Deputies were immediately there in the area and arrested the male suspect first."

Andino was not injured, Demings added. Both Andino and Santos were taken into custody.

Ingerham is a 20-year law enforcement veteran who has been with the Orange County Sheriff's Office since 2001. Sheriff's officials said Ingerham would be reassigned to administrative duties for no less than a week during both an internal investigation and a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation.
