The Department of Agriculture announced this week 48 million chickens and turkeys have been infected, and things are only expected to get worse this fall with a potential increase in prices.

Scientists are working on developing a vaccine to target the Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) that has killed 48 million birds since early March in 15 states. The virus has been identified in the U.S. backyard and commercial flocks of birds, according to the health department.

The health department said none of Florida’s birds have tested positive for the virus. However, Publix told News 13 it is closely monitoring the situation.

”Certain items may be temporarily discontinued until we have an adequate product inventory. Currently, our deli plant has been unable to secure the supply of ingredients necessary to maintain production on private-label turkey products and select home-style prepared salads. We are also anticipating cost increases on all items containing eggs.”

Publix officials said they are working with suppliers to build an adequate supply of ingredients.

At Florida Hospital, they are warning their customers that they will have to remove some items from their cafeteria menu because of rationing from suppliers.

No humans have been infected with the bird flu.
