You may be surprised to hear that even though we've been getting those daily downpours, Volusia and Flagler counties are actually parched.

News 13’s weather experts say the area needs more than just scattered showers to rise above normal rain levels to bring some parts of Florida out of drought or near drought conditions.

"We have abnormally conditions up and down the east coast and a severe drought just east of Jacksonville, severe to extreme drought conditions across southeast Florida," said News 13 Chief Meteorologist Bryan Karrick.

Volusia County falls under near drought conditions.

News 13 weather experts say both DeLand and Daytona Beach  have lower than normal average rainfall, something homeowners who see this every afternoon, have a hard time believing.

Despite the fact that it's been raining every day, would it surprise you hear that we're under near-drought conditions? Wow, that is a surprise," said Daytona Beach resident Charles LaCoui.

"I guess it would be a little bit of a surprise," said Daytona Beach resident Rocky Pluff

"I'm very surprised," said Deltona resident Karyle Martin.

Martin is seeing dry conditions in her own Deltona lake front property. A lake was once all the way up to her dock.

Now it stands several feet above and away from the water's edge.

"With the rain we've been getting this summer, I'm surprised we haven't seen it go up at all," said Martin.

News 13 weather experts say that the recent downpours are not enough to get us out of the near-drought conditions because they're scattered showers and not widespread rain."

The good news is Daytona Beach firefighters say conditions are not a tinder box because humidity levels are up keeping the fire danger at a moderate level.

News 13 chief meteorologist News 13 Chief Meteorologist Bryan Karrick says the tide will turn.

"We do have more widespread rain in the forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday thanks to a stalled out front. Yes we could see some much need rain over the course of the days ahead."

Meaning Martin could see lake levels on her property go up if this rain falls throughout the weekend.
