Paying a toll when you think you don't have to can be frustrating.

Karl, from Orlando, writes in this week:

When driving west on State Road 528, if I exit at State Road 520, I'm charged a toll. The marker that designates the start of the Expressway Authority is on the far west side of the bridge/interchange. So if I haven't entered their authority as they marked it, why do I pay this toll?

The Beachline tolls can be a little tricky to figure out sometimes because three different agencies control it.

The stretch of State Road 528 run by the Central Florida Expressway is the 23-mile stretch from mile marker 8 (Boggy Creek Road) in Orlando to State Road 520 near the Orange-Brevard county line.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise is one of the other two agencies and operates the westernmost 8 miles, from Boggy Creek Road to I-4 near the Orange County Convention Center.

The Florida Department of Transportation District 5 operates everything east of State Road 520 to the Bennett Causeway at U.S. 1 in Brevard County.

However, the State Road 520 exit is operated and tolled by Florida's Turnpike Enterprise, not the Expressway Authority.

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise collects money for the Florida Department of Transportation.
