An investigation is underway after carjacking suspects and an Orlando police officer exchanged gunfire overnight in Pine Hills.

An Orlando police officer was patrolling the area of Mercy Drive and Princeton Street around 1:10 a.m. The officer recognized a vehicle that was taken in an armed carjacking on Saturday after matching the license plate. The police officer requested backup and started following the vehicle.

The vehicle then turned onto Chantelle Road and it abruptly stopped in a driveway. Two suspects exited the vehicle, and the police officer began to chase the suspects, a report states.

The passenger of the vehicle pulled out a gun and fired toward the officer, who returned fire. Neither the suspect nor the officer were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

The suspect who fired at the police officer was later apprehended by a K-9 unit and taken into custody, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, described as a man in his early 20s, remains at-large.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The police officer involved in the incident is on paid administrative leave, per standard procedure.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office assisted with the call.

No other information was immediately available.
