A 19-year-old woman was bitten in the foot by a shark while in the water at New Smyrna Beach on Friday.

Volusia County Beach Safety officials said it happened around 1:45 p.m. while the woman was swimming in waist-deep water off the beach, along the 700 block of North Atlantic Avenue.

The shark bit left minor lacerations on the woman's foot. She was treated and released on scene.

Beach Safety officials said the shark was not seen.

Friday's incident was the third shark bite this year at New Smyrna Beach, known as the "shark bite capital of the world."
