A Volusia County woman has been arrested after deputies said she beat a 12-year-old boy with a bag full of potatoes in Orange City.

Rachel Salters, 46, was arrested Thursday on charges of child abuse and tampering with evidence.

According to investigators, the victim asked Salters to make him some dinner. That started a verbal argument, which led Salters to pick up a full bag of potatoes and begin swinging it at the boy.

Deputies said the boy ran into a bathroom, locked the door and hid behind the toilet, but Salters kicked the door open and began hitting the boy in the head with the bag of potatoes.

The bag then broke open, and Salters began throwing potatoes at the boy, deputies said. The victim was not seriously injured.

The tampering charge stemmed from Salters reportedly removing a potato from the bathroom after it had been marked as evidence. Salters told the responding deputy she forgot and wanted to clean up the bathroom.

Investigators said Salters also claimed she didn't know why the bathroom door frame was broken or how the potato got in the bathroom.

As Salters was taken into custody, deputies said she shouted, "I didn't hit him with the potato; I only threw it at him."

Salters was booked Thursday into the Volusia County Jail on a bond totaling $11,500.
