While many people spend Memorial Day with friends and family, it's all about remembering those who gave their lives for our country.

In front of the Lawton House in Oviedo on Monday, you'll see hundreds of crosses on display in honor of the Florida soldiers and military personnel who have died while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Several groups, including the Military Support Team of the First United Methodist Church of Oviedo, the city of Oviedo and the Oviedo Historical Society, along with Jim Vanderbleek, worked together to make the tribute a reality.

Vanderbleek created the crosses, and the brother-sister team of Connor and Chloe MacFarlane worked to make sure each cross had a wreath.

Connor and Chloe's father died in Afghanistan in 2012. Connor made the wreaths, while Chloe refurbished them and had local Scouts volunteer to place them on the markers.

There are 380 crosses in total, a visual reminder of the fallen. A Memorial Day ceremony was held at the Lawton House at 9 a.m. to those lost.

"You can't just drive by; you have to come and walk them," said Frankie Godwin, a volunteer with the local church Military Support Team. "Personally, my husband is a retired National Guard officer, and three of his soldiers are here. So, it's very important to my family that they be remembered."

You can visit the memorial yourself on Monday and read the names of the fallen. It's located on West Broadway Street, in front of the well-known Lawton House.
