A local fallen soldier was honored with his own memorial in Seminole County Sunday afternoon.

U.S. Army Specialist Brenden Salazar, of Chuluota, was killed while serving in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012.

Now a local organization is teaming up with Rock & Brews restaurant, to remember Salazar as a hero, one who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

“It's an honor. It's a privilege. The fact that we can come here and eat and see our son and the fact that other people who didn't even know him... It's just amazing. Thank you, thank you is surely not enough but it's a blessing. It's wonderful, that's all we want is to never forget, and always remember our fallen," shared Brenden Salazar's mother, Lieutenant Colonel Jovanna Nelson.

Salazar was just 20 years old when he was killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in July 2012.

However, the 2010 graduate of Hagerty High School in Oviedo will never be forgotten.

He now has his own memorial outside Rock & Brews restaurant on Red Bug Lake Road.

The memorial was organized by Never Forgotten Memorials.  A group of veterans who have made it their mission to build individual memorials for soldiers, so communities never forget their fallen heroes.

“It shows that hey, one of your guys here has went out there, took the selfless decision of serving your country, so that you and his community back home gets to be free and live the American Dream," shared David Del Castillo, who serves as one of the directors at Never Forgotten Memorials.

Both of Salazar’s parents still serve and work in the military. In fact, his father could not attend the unveiling ceremony because he is currently stationed overseas. So Mr. and Mrs. Nelson understand and live with their son’s sacrifice first hand every single day.

"I think there's an understanding of why he did what he did. Why he had the love of going into the Army and fighting for the country," Lt. Col Nelson explained.

"I think there's an understanding there because obviously my husband and I have done the same so I think that's the part where I can relate but I can tell you when I was told the news, the mother inside me foreshadowed that soldier because I wanted him to be here. I want him to be here just like any other mother would but I'm so proud of him because he represented our country and our service very well, to the utmost of his ability and he gave his live for us," Lt. Col Nelson concluded.
