A New Smyrna Beach man may face up to 30 years in prison. The Volusia County jury concluded Friday that he was responsible for a hit-and-run crash that resulted in a couple’s fatal death.

The jury convicted Brian Dale Kennedy, 39, for leaving the scene of a fatal crash and driving on a suspended license. The jurors deliberated for about 3 hours before returning the guilty verdicts, according to the Volusia County Office of the State Attorney.

Kennedy admitted that he consumed 6 to 8 beers a few hours before midnight on August 6, 2013. He was driving eastbound on State 44 when he struck a couple who was walking in the same direction.

Zachary Tyler Kahle, 24, and Savannah Dejarnette, 26, were killed instantly. Kennedy was later identified as a person of interest. He turned himself to the police and told investigators that he thought he had struck a deer.

Investigators concluded that there was a “human-head shaped hole” in the windshield with tufts of human hair and blood found on the vehicle, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

Kennedy’s sentence will be read on June 30.
