A South Sumter Middle School student was arrested Wednesday for stealing a firearm and is now charged with grand theft.

Mathew Stanley, 14, brought the concealed weapon to school. He admitted to stealing the firearm when he was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Police discovered the Kel-Tec 9mm semi-automatic handgun stolen from a residence on Lake Panasoffkee. The victim notified officers of the potential suspect. Shortly after, the school’s resource officer and principal discovered the stolen firearm on the students’ person located in his waistband.
