A memorial service was held Saturday night for the Milena Chiri. She is the Daytona Beach woman who police said was killed by her husband during a domestic dispute.

Milena Chiri’s co-workers joined in the celebration of life. They said Milena was a hard worker and a good mother. But they said she often spoke of violence going on at home and they feared something like this was going to happen.

Milena’s employer, Susan Davis said the tragedy is still sinking in. “How could anybody do what he did? It's still kinda surreal. Like, it can't be."

Milena's mother, Josefa, her sister and niece from Costa Rica joined Milena's friends and co-workers one last time, thanking them for their support during this tragedy.

Milena's niece Dhaftnee said the tragedy has been compounded by the Daytona Beach's chief of police saying his officers made a mistake in not arresting Johan Chiri after Milena called for help during a domestic dispute.

“Im thankful that he is apologizing," Dhaftnee Hidalgo-Solano said. "The problem is that apology won't bring my aunt back."

She also said they have not been able to speak with the couple's two daughters.

Milena's friends and co-workers said she would talk about violence going on at her home and they tried to help. They said they hope others in domestic violence situations get away to avoid a similar tragedy.

"Do it. you can do it. I know it's easier said than done but there are people who care. You got to listen and you got to go to them," said Victoria Delvalle. One of Milena’s co-workers.

The family said they will take Milena's ashes back to Costa Rica. They said they will never give up trying to maintain some type of relationship with the couple's two daughters.
