As we set to begin an interview with Eva Bishop, who lives along Forest Grove Drive in Palm Coast, we had to pause.

A few big trucks were driving past, and we couldn't hear each other.

"You can hear that; it's a little loud here," Bishop said. "It's not enjoyable when you're in your frontyard. Now, the backyard's not quite so bad, but in the front, it's pretty bad."

Eva and Tommy Bishop moved to their home 10 years ago. Things have changed over that decade, including the addition of a new high school across the street, new roads and more traffic.

When students at Matanazs High School begin their summer break, crews will begin building the I-95 and Matanzas Woods Parkway interchange.

Once that begins, work will then start on projects to extend Palm Harbor Parkway by the city of Palm Coast, while Flagler County will take care of Old Kings Road on the west end of Forest Grove.

Those two extensions will eliminate dangerous 90-degree turns.

Carl Cote, Palm Coast's projects coordinator, said a lot of coordination will go into these three projects. The city, county, state and school system all have a stake in them.

"All three projects are pretty much going to be going on concurrently," Cote said. "They're going to start — and some have started — and they're going to last about a year. So, by end of next summer, all three projects should be wrapped up and completed."

It will virtually eliminate traffic in front of the Bishops' house, giving Eva the quiet neighborhood street she once had.

"A neighborhood street, exactly," she said. "We'll still have the school, and I don't mind that."

Two miles away from the Bishops' home is Florida Park Drive. Those who live there may see positive effects from this construction over time.

Homeowners here have long complained about increased traffic along their residential street. It's hoped these motorists will find the parkway extensions and use them instead.

Prep work has already begun on the interstate interchange area. Crews plan to do the most construction when school is out for the summer, and they can close off the existing overpass.
