An Edgewater High School teacher is accused of having a sexual relationship with one of his 14-year-old students, police said.

Ethan Hickey, 25, of Orlando, was arrested around 5:30 p.m. Thursday and faces a slew of charges:

  • Lewd or lascivious battery
  • Lewd/lascivious molestation on a victim between the ages of 12 and 15
  • Lewd lascivious behavior-conduct by a person 18 years old or older
  • Sexual assault on a victim between the ages of 12 and 18 without physical force
  • Child abuse
  • Sexual conduct by a child

According to police, the 14-year-old victim told them a sexual relationship with Hickey was going on for about three months.

The victim was a student of Hickey’s, who is a science teacher.

The teenager told police the incidents happened 10-15 times, beginning in January and lasting through April.

The victim provided police with her cell phone, which detectives said revealed information supporting an illicit relationship occurring between the two.

Hickey was granted bond, with conditions: no returning to the school until case is settled, no contact with the victim and no unsupervised visits with minors.

Hickey has been with the district since 2012. He is also the head coach of boys and girls track.

The Orange County Public Schools placed him on leave with pay pending the outcome of the school’s internal investigation.
