Army officials say an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper from Seminole County has died during a training operation at Fort Bragg.

They say 27-year-old Spc. Nicholas Roberts, of Longwood, died Thursday during training at an area called Sicily Drop Zone. His death is being investigated.

Roberts joined the U.S. Army Reserve in 2010 as a military police officer and deployed to Afghanistan from March 2011 to January 2012. He went active duty in 2014 and became an infantryman.

After training at Fort Benning, Georgia, Roberts was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division last December.

Col. Curtis Buzzard says Roberts had the experience and leadership qualities that the Army wants in its paratroopers even though he had only recently joined the division.
