Flagler County's airport has changed its name as it loses its rural image, and that's a good thing, county officials said.

The Flagler County Commission unanimously vote Monday to change the name of the airport to the Flagler Executive Airport.

It used to simply be called the Flagler County Airport.

The airport had its alpha identifier changed in November 2014 from XFL to FIN. The "X" in the former designation signified a rural designation.

"It's more inviting to visitors and it's more inviting to corporate businesses," said Roy Sieger, the airport director. "Of the 511 airports with towers, there were two that had an X designation. Now there's only one, and it isn't Flagler County."

More than $22 million in projects and improvements have been completed at the airport in the last six years. Another $15 million to $20 million in projects and improvements are planned, county officials said.

"That is what people expect when they fly into airports," County Commissioner Barbara Revels said. "It's just fabulous."
