Police officers are credited with saving a woman's life after investigators said her husband tried to kill her by dousing her in gasoline. He then tried to set her on fire and drown her in a pool.

The victim said she wanted to share her story to inspire domestic violence victims to leave while they can.

"First, I have to think about my daughters, about what I am," the woman told News 13 on Tuesday. "And I have a life to go. So, thanks, I think, to two people: God and the (Kissimmee police officers)."

News 13 is not identifying the woman.

"If they weren't there at that point, I would be dead," the woman said. "Not because the gas, not because the knife, but because he put me in the pool, so at that point, I have to say to them, 'Thank you.' They saved my life."

The incident happened when Kissimmee police received a frantic 911 call around 2 p.m. Tuesday from a home in Osceola County.

Victim: "My husband has a knife. ... He wants to kill me, and I'm in the bathroom."

Victim: " ... He's trying to open the door."

911 dispatcher: "He's trying to open the door?"

Victim: "Yeah, he has a knife and wants to kill me."

The woman said it was her 50th birthday and, although she and her husband had recently separated and were contemplating divorce, he wanted to get back together.

The woman said things escalated after she told him she didn't want to get back together.

According to police, the man poured gasoline on the woman and then tried to set her on fire. She said he also tried to stab her.

When police arrived to the house and attempted to approach the man, he tried to drown the woman in the pool while continuing to douse her with gasoline, a report states.

"Very concerning," Kissimmee Police Chief Lee Massie said. "We're charging him with attempted murder, so I think the charge itself speaks to what we believe his intent was."

The woman's daughter was also hurt during the incident. She said her daughters are the reason she wants to speak out and share her story of survival.

"I know I will cry," the woman said. "I know it's not easy, but I have to keep going. I have to be (strong) for my daughters."

The suspect has been charged with four felonies, including attempted murder, attempted arson, battery and domestic violence aggravated assault. News 13 is not releasing the man's identity to protect the victim's identity.
